To keep or not to keep

One site that is preserved in Singapore is the Memorial to the Civilian Victims of the Japanese Occupation, which is also know as Civilian War Memorial. This place is one of Singapore's most famous heritage landmarks and was gazetted by the National Heritage Board on 15 August 2013 as Singapore's 65th national monument. It holds historical significance as the only memorial in Singapore to commemorate civilian war victims who died during World War II.
I believe this place will be able to bring back the memories of those times during World War II for those who went through all the hardships. This is definitely a very meaningful place to preserve.

Should Singapore be complacent

No. Singapore being a small country cannot afford to complacent. By being complacent, Singapore will be overly satisfied with herself and hence overlooking many political dangers. When Singapore becomes complacent, she will start to deprove in both economy and military, and Singapore being a small country might not be able to survive such a big blow. Futhermore, the government is still receiving several complaints from people. This shows that there is still room for improvement. I believe Singapore should never be complacent but continue to strive for the better.

My China Buddy
Before I interact with my china buddy
I believe that the China students will be really outgoing as most of the students are the only child and do not have siblings at home. Hence, when they go to school, they will tend to talk to their friends more as they do not have someone around their age to talk to at home. I think this will allow us to interact with the students more as it would be easier to hold conversations between one another as I believe the China students will be very enthusiastic. Other than that, I think the China students will be more independent as being the only child, they could not depend on their siblings for help. We will be able to be as independent as them during the trip.

Economy - Ageing population
3 things I found out
- I have learnt that the One Child Policy in China has brought a lot of pain to many women as they would be forced to abort the baby. Many people were very upset about this policy and hence causing social tension.
- I have learnt that Singapore is facing similar problems as China. Furthermore, Singapore is smaller compared to China. Hence, Singapore would not be able to endure the increasing birth rate. However, if Singapore lowers the birth rate, there will be another problem. Singapore will have too many elderlies and too less children.
- I have learnt that if Singaporeans have more children, they will face a heavier tax burden and there will be a higher demand of Basic Needs. Many people decided not to give birth to too many children due to this reasons.

2 Perceptions I gained
- I think that it is a bit too harsh for China to force the women to go for abortion just because of the One Child Policy. They could have try to prevent the women from having their second children instead of asking them to go for abortion as abortion will cause a lot of harm to the female's body.
- I think it is weird that at first, both China and Singapore were worried about having too many children but now, they are worried about the aging population and are asking people to give birth to more children.

1 Question I have
- Why did China and Singapore even implement the one-child policy in the first place when now they are facing the aging population population?

Chingay 2016

On 30 January this year, the whole year 2 batch was invited to watch the Chingay preview, and of course, I was really excited about it. In my whole entire life, I have never been able to watch Chingay live, every year, my whole family could only crowd around a small television screen and watch Chingay through television. On that very day, before we could even sit down, we could already feel the Chingay Spirit. Music blasting, drums rolling and last but not least, the emcees getting the audience all hyper.

VOYAGE SG100
This is the grand opening where performers are dressed in lighted constumes while performing.
Voyage SG100 is to signify the start of the journey of Singapore towards SG100.

Because We Are Different,We Are One
The Chinese, Malay and Indian cultural performances draws audiences in appreciation of local cultural heritage and legacies through performing arts and music.
Friendship All Over The World
A performance put up by performers from Japan. It was followed by other performances by performers from other countries such as, Malaysia, Russia, South Korea, USA, Taiwan, Thailand
Lights of Legacy, Brighter Singapore
Last but not least is the finale. All the performers return on stage with the guest of  honours give their speech. This marks the end of the whole performance.

Personally, I think the purpose of Chingay 2016 is to mark the first year of Singapore's next 50 years towards SG100 and hence, Chingay 2016 is themed," Lights of Legacy, Brighter Singapore"《智慧灯海,璀璨新加坡》, celebrating the legacy and wisdom of our found Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew and other founding fathers based on the core values advocated by them and pledging out support to live by it and move towards a Brighter future Singapore. Other than that, I think Chingay 2016 is a platform that brings  the best performers in Singapore other countries all over the world together, regardless of language, race and religion, to present on this stage a spectacular performance.

The First Formal Chingay Parade in Singapore was mooted by the then-Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew who was also the chairman of the People's Association (PA). Chingay, with all its noise and gaiety, would compensate for the ban on firecrackers, a customary New Year practice to drive away evil spirits. For its first street parade on 4 February 1973, the PA teamed up with the Singapore National Pugilistic Federation for a grand show in the Year of the Ox, depicting aspects of Chinese culture – dragon and lion dances, martial arts and street opera. So well received was the first Chingay Parade that the PA made it an annual festival. It celebrates its 40th anniversary in 2012.
Throughout, the years, many changes were made. The first Chingay Parade only consist of Performance related to the Chinese culture. However, from from the Chingay preview that we went, I observed that the performers come from different races and different countries, such as Japan. The Chingay performances has shown that age, race, language and creed are no barriers, in Singapore, we celebrate Chingay as one.

I think this change happened because Singapore has become a country with people from different races and different country. Now there are not only Chinese in our society, but a large group of people from other race and religion. In my opinion, I think by including the performances from other countries, those who came from different backgrounds to Singapore will have a stronger sense of Singapore and it also shows that Singapore is a huge family that accept others despite each and everyones differences.

I think that the organizers have successfully fulfilled the purpose of Chingay 2016. By watching the spectacular performances put up by the performers, I could say, I was proud of them, including all the time and effort they have put in, in order to make this performance a success. On the day of the preview, the performances were breath-taking and the LED lights brightened the F1 Pit Building. Seeing all the performances from different backgrounds dancing in sync and harmony was spectacular and not to mention about the grand opening and finale that added much vibrant to the whole show. I could still remember the broad smiles on all the spectators face as we left the venue. This proves that the performance was awesome and I believe it will leave a lasting impression in everyone's heart.

Does being rich means happy?

I think being rich does not necessary mean being happy. Although with a lot of money, you can buy whatever you want without having much worries about going bankrupt, but I think poor people can also lead a happy life. To me, happiness is being able to stay under the same roof with our family while leading a simple life. I find that it is a privilege to be able to be with your family.

Even though, some families are poor, it does not mean they are not happy, on the other hand, even though some families are rich, it does not mean they are happy. The reason why I think happiness is having the privilege to be able to be with out family is because I have friends whose parents who work until very late every night for 6 days a week. They say that they hardly have time to talk to them and it was shocking to find out that barely know about each other. This is probably one reason why some people are unhappy.

Although Singapore is one of the most prosperous country in the world, but it is definitely not one of the most happy country. Some time ago, a survey was conducted and the results had shown that Singapore was one of the most unhappy countries although we are one of the richest country in the world. This was probably due to the fact that Singaporeans like to complain a lot. This has shown that  Singaporeans are not happy although we are so privileged and are counted as rich people.
Rich people may be able to buy branded and expensive things, but they cannot buy happiness. No matter how rich you are, happiness cannot be bought. Being rich or poor does not really matter, what is important is wether we are happy or not.

RV60 reflection

After looking back at those days of the RV60 training, I realize that many of us were having issues with this event. Many of us have been complaining about the tight schedules and rehearsal almost everyday after school. However, the truth is that many people actually have a lot of time, it is just because it is very tiring to battle the hot sun everyday and practice the same song or dance moves again and again.

RV60 was definitely one of the few most important events in the school, it is not only the 60th of anniversary for River Valley High School but it also signifies all the hard work everyone had put through to make River Valley High School such a wonderful IP school. Since I was sitting at the back of the field, I was able to witness some of the performance and I have to admit, it was awesome. This show that all the hard work everyone had put in had paid off. RV has finally turned 60 and this will definitely be a memorable event. I feel proud of RV.

Extra in the Ordinary

This is a picture of a balloon taken on the 16 of January 2016 to celebrate the birthday of River Valley High School, RV60.

This event had marked the 60 years of River valley high school's success and to celebrate this special day, the entire school made their way down to celebrate this diamond jubilee.
That day, a performance was put up by the students. Although most people would think that it is just a performance, however the students had put in a lot of effort, battling the hot sun, rehearsing everyday until very late at night just for this important day, however the performance pulled through it.

After days of rehearsals, the day of performance finally came. All the students put in what they had learned and finished the performance which was followed by a standing ovations.

Although the process was very tiring, but it was surely meaningful.

Introduction

Hello, I am Yi Ling. I am from class 2K and my register number is 18. I was born on 20 November 2002. My CCA is Chinese Orchestra and I play the ZhongRuan. Since I started learning this instrument since Primary 5, I managed to finish grade 6 before Primary 6, and this is also one reason i decided to continue playing this instrument in Chinese Orchestra. Since I already know how to play this instrument, i believe it would be easier for me to learn the songs, hence leaving more time for me to cope with my studies. Other than the ZhongRuan, I also play the piano, this is because I am very obsessed with music, like kpop and some chinese songs, when i start listening to a song, I would listen to it over and over again like for about a hundred times, this is probably why I really like to sleep on rainy days while listening to music.

Next, my favourite number is 22 and my favourite colour is yellow. To be honest, I don’t know why I like the number 22 and the colour yellow in particular, but i guess, if u like something, u don’t need a reason for it? I am quite excited for this OELP trip and I hope it would be an enjoyable one. I hope through this experience I will get to know my group members more and I will definitely look forward to this year’s programme.
